Sangeeta gnanamu bhakti vina

« on: April 02, 2007, 02:35:43 AM »

Thread 1 : Introduction and Trivia : The term 'Vaggeyakara' is very much local to southern Indian music, because that part of the world was gifted with some great music maestros who Composed Kritis [lyrics + Raga and Laya/Tala binding] and sung them especially during the bhakti movement between the year 1500-1900.

I am not going into their chronological order nor will I dwell; into the most significant contributors, however it will be a good ideal to discuss about it including a more informative introduction.

Now, the trivia question I have is - The term 'Composer' certainly falls way short of the actual meaning of 'Vaggeyakara' - Now do we really have equivalent term in English, and my another question is do we have examples of Vaggeyakara's in Hindustani and world Music ? - I have read Rajan Parikkar speaking very highly of Pt. Ramashreya Jha - but ofcourse the drift is that the Vaggeyakara of bhakti movement epitomized the concept of "sangetagnyanamu bhakti vina" as exhorted by Sant Thyagaraja  which means what is the use of Music knowledge/talent without devotion to god an aspect that is found wanting in the Hindustani music [i mean not emphasized].
