One of the rare voices I really love is that of Jon B Higgins.  I had heard about him even while growing up in a remote part of Karnataka, he was that famous!  It is absolutely remarkable that an American could master our traditional music and earn the title of "Bhagavatar" in a relatively short time.  It is really sad that he died prematurely, in an automobile accident.  Here is an interesting story about him singing in front of Lord Krishna in Udupi:

V. Thyagarajan, a friend and colleague of Jon Higgins, told this anecdote to SPAN magazine:

A party of musicians, Jon among them, went to Udipi to see the Krishna temple.  The American wore a dhoti and a kurta as was his custom in Madras . . . but he was much too fair complexioned to be an Indian, and the priests would not let him enter the temple.... So Jon stood where Kanakadasa the untouchable had stood centuries ago, to catch a glimpse of the idol from a distance as best he could.  His musician friends stood with him, refusing to go inside the temple if Jon was not allowed.  Then it occurred to one of them to ask Jon to sing the famous song, "Krishna, nee begane baro,” a composition in Kannada.... When the air was filled with the vibrant melody of his splendid voice there was no keeping away the crowds that gathered around to hear him.  The priests, astonished, begged the singer to come in, and what Kanakadasa could not achieve, the foreigner did.

I have only heard about the legend of Higgins bhagavathar as I grew, up from my Father.
Reading this 'mini-miracle' about him, I am all the more exicted to know where could I find his masterpieces - and if any could someone suggest any particular Cassette/album that I could try.

I got one album of Jon B Higgins from Planet M in 2005.  It is called "Carnatic Vocal" and has 9 tracks:

Sri, Rudrapriya, Pantuvarali, Hindola, Devagandhari, Chakravaka, Bhairavi, Behag, and Ananda Bhairavi.

Both the above albums are released by HMV (who else can have such rare recordings?)

I also got a rare album of Kannada devotional songs called "Dasamruta - Kannada Devotional Songs" which features the incredible "Krishna Nee Begane Baaro" (song writer: Sri Vyasarayaru) sung by Jon.  It is such a nice coincidence that I woke up to that song today morning (my iPod alarm clock picks up devotional songs at random at 6:55 AM everyday)...  He has sung so well...  I was reading that Udupi story again (while looking at your post) and the memory of Jon brought tears in my eyes.  That is the power of music.  BTW, another great song in Dasamruta album is the eternal Purandaradasa song "Jagadoddharana", sung by B.S. Raja Iyengar, very haunting voice.  After listening to all these, my love for Carnatic music has increased so much (after such a long spell of Hindustani fascination)!  In my opinion, when it comes to Bhakti Rasa, nothing comes close to Carnatic classical music.

Talking about Bhakti Rasa, let me share with you the experience I had in Sri Venkateshwara Temple in Pittsburgh, where I met Sri Rudrapatnam S Ramakanth, an eminent vocalist and the son of great R. K. Srikanthan.  More about that in my next post.
